Work continues on the project of advocating and enabling the creation of a free drop in youth program/space in central Langford for 13-18 year olds. Student input into the City's new strategic plan clearly indicated a high level of interest. Of the 8 questions asked of Belmont students, the question "does Langford need a youth drop in centre?" received the highest number of "yes" returns in the entire student survey. The environmental scan that we conducted on Youth programs in Langford, provided further proof that a Youth Space is needed. We are working collaboratively with the City of Langford and other stakeholders, recognizing that this will be a longer term project. Our enabling efforts thus far have included discussions with numerous service providers including the Boys and Girls Club. We have also been busy establishing our networking connections with organizations like The Foundry Project and The Village Initiative ( https://thevillageinitiative.ca/ ). Youth engagement and involvement in community is a LRAS priority.
We now have agreements with the City of Langford (Parks and Fire Rescue) and Greater Victoria Green Team (GVGT) to work together on park projects in Langford. LRAS is now a partner in the stewardship of Westhills Park; contributing to general clean up, removal of invasive species, and making the park fire smart (reducing fire risk). We have a total of 5 events planned in Westhills; 4 sponsored by LRAS and 1 by Langford Fire Rescue (Firesmart). In addition to these 5 events, LRAS will also support any other Langford events that GVGT has planned...so there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer for community events. Please mark these 5 Westhills dates in your planner: March 09, April 07, May 11, July 14 (change made from the 13th) and September 14th....10AM to 1PM. All community members are welcome. Update 25 June 2024. One of LRAS's projects is to advocate for Langford based support programs for newcomers to Canada (immigrants). This support is currently only available in downtown Victoria and our Board of Directors felt that transportation could be a barrier. Accordingly, we have been meeting and discussing with downtown service providers for some time, and at our last meeting with Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society (VIRCS), they announced they have secured funding to provide a "BC Newcomer Services Program" (BCNSP) to Langford. Last week we met with the program manager and toured potential Langford rental sites for their program. We also connected VIRCS with our connections at West Shore Parks and Rec and we believe the preferred location for their program will be Centennial Centre, a good central Langford location. We are very excited by this development as it is great news for the Langford community. In addition, LRAS, in conjunction with VIRCS, has started planning and will host a "Canadian Newcomers Information Session" in Langford in mid August....bringing in numerous service providers to provide information on their programs to a growing segment of our Langford population. This is such great news for Langford!!!! We will continue our efforts in this project to get more services provided in Langford.
