Work continues on the project of advocating and enabling the creation of a free drop in youth program/space in central Langford for 13-18 year olds. Student input into the City's new strategic plan clearly indicated a high level of interest. Of the 8 questions asked of Belmont students, the question "does Langford need a youth drop in centre?" received the highest number of "yes" returns in the entire student survey. The environmental scan that we conducted on Youth programs in Langford, provided further proof that a Youth Space is needed. We are working collaboratively with the City of Langford and other stakeholders, recognizing that this will be a longer term project. Our enabling efforts thus far have included discussions with numerous service providers including the Boys and Girls Club. We have also been busy establishing our networking connections with organizations like The Foundry Project and The Village Initiative ( https://thevillageinitiative.ca/ ). Youth engagement and involvement in community is a LRAS priority.
We now have agreements with the City of Langford (Parks and Fire Rescue) and Greater Victoria Green Team (GVGT) to work together on park projects in Langford. LRAS is now a partner in the stewardship of Westhills Park; contributing to general clean up, removal of invasive species, and making the park fire smart (reducing fire risk). We have a total of 5 events planned in Westhills; 4 sponsored by LRAS and 1 by Langford Fire Rescue (Firesmart). In addition to these 5 events, LRAS will also support any other Langford events that GVGT has planned...so there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer for community events. Please mark these 5 Westhills dates in your planner: March 09, April 07, May 11, July 13 and September 14th....10AM to 1PM. All community members are welcome. It has been brought to the Board's attention that most support services for new Canadians/Immigrants are located in downtown Victoria. This geographic requirement can pose additional challenges for Langford residents that want or need these services. We have engaged three of the downtown non profit organizations that provide support to Immigrants and all of them recognize the outreach need in Langford and are very interested in the concept. However finding a suitable community space and the associated new funding is definitely a challenge. The LRAS board is actively exploring solutions, including seeking collaboration with those that can provide cost-effective community space.
